Prisons in Portugal and Europe: Regimes of Detention and Monitoring of Regimes
International conference at the Museu do Aljube and the University of Lisbon, 23 and 24 May 2019 | Conferences held in English or Portuguese, without translation
Objectives
The analyses of the processes for the protection against torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment, of persons deprived of their liberty has been ongoing for some time; nevertheless, a lot is still unknown. Furthermore, the historical, social and political study of the interaction between these processes and changes in regimes of detention is still at an early stage, as is research on monitoring efforts to prevent torture by countries which have ratified the Optional Protocol to the UN-Convention against torture (OPCAT).
Limited to a comparison of Portugal and Switzerland, the international conference wants to highlight the processes and changes at work. It will describe the endeavours to overcome torture, the instances which have been involved, the successes obtained, and the role of observers. It will tackle the abolition of torture in national law, efforts deployed today in matters of prevention and the achievements of both countries regarding the eradication of torture.
The international conference of 2017
The international conference organised in the framework of the exhibition of the PPPP in Porto in 2017 addressed the theme “Prisons in Portugal and Europe: History, culture and photography”. On October 12 and 13, some 15 conferences of invited speakers presented the conferences on different subjects chosen in relation with the conference theme (for more details see the conference program of 2017). The proceedings of the sessions are now available; they will be presented at a vernissage during the conference of 2019.

The conferences on the programme will be given by invited researchers coming from Portugal, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and Austria. They will be held in Portuguese and English, with translation from Portuguese into English.
